Sizing in three steps (WaxMelters method)

  1. Enter the largest working batch in gallons, meaning actual production gallons, not a tank label.
  2. Add headspace: 20% is the starting planning value. Mixing, foaming or ingredient additions may need more.
  3. Add growth: 50% is the planning value. Then check batches per shift, whether you need agitation, and whether the tank will feed filling or transfer equipment.

Should I size a soap tank by gallons?

Yes, for soap. But don't size from gallons alone. Physical vessel capacity isn't automatically the recommended working batch, because mixing, foaming and agitation displacement need extra volume.
