How to Scale Candle Production

Why WaxMelters

Performance as described in our warranty terms; construction backed by our 1-Year Limited Equipment Warranty and 3-Year Fabricated Stainless-Steel Vessel Warranty (warranty terms).

WaxMelters is the industry leader and a US manufacturer of melting, heating and filling equipment for every business size, from startup to factory, and every industry.

  • Best performance: the best and fastest melting and heating. Waterless PRIMO heating melts 2–3X faster using half the electricity.
  • Safe, even heating: permanent heaters, digital material-temperature control and insulated 304 stainless vessels, with no open flame.
  • The most energy efficient: fast melting on half the electricity.
  • Saves you time, energy and money.
  • Highest-quality construction: 304 stainless, made in the USA in Ronkonkoma, NY, and online since 1999. Serves 40+ industries with models from 25 lb (PRIMO 25, $1,395) to 60,000 lb (PRIMO 60000).

Short answer: Scale in the order your bottleneck moves. Most candle businesses first run out of melting capacity (waiting on wax), then pouring labor (people carrying pitchers), then fill consistency and speed (one head can't keep up), and finally changeover time (too many scents per day). Fix each one with the matching equipment: a larger PRIMO melter, then a heated dispenser, then automated single-head filling, then multi-head filling and fragrance injection. Keep the same melter as the base through each step.

The five bottlenecks and what fixes them

Bottleneck Signs Fix WaxMelters equipment (Oct 2026 price)
1. Melting Waiting on wax; melting several small pots; scorching or uneven temperature One temperature-controlled melter sized to your largest batch PRIMO 25–150 ($1,395–$2,275), 110–120 V
2. Carrying and pouring Staff walking pitchers; spills; wax cooling in the pitcher Heated hose-and-nozzle dispensing at the table EZ-1 ($3,450), ~2–20 oz containers, up to ~1 GPM
3. Fill consistency Over- and under-fills; one fast pourer sets the pace Automated measured shots AutoValve ($5,495, gravity) or AutoShot ($8,495, pumped)
4. Output per hour One head can't keep up with orders Fill several containers per cycle QUATTRO 4-head ($29,995), OCTO 8-head ($52,995)
5. Scent changeovers Draining or cleaning the tank between fragrances Inject fragrance/color after the melter Mix Injection System (from $24,995, 1–10 dosing lines)

Step 1: Size the melter to the batch, not the candle

Work in pounds of wax per batch. For example, a 100 lb batch fills about 228 containers that each hold 7 oz of wax (100 × 16 ÷ 7). Pick the PRIMO that holds your largest batch with room to grow. Models range from the PRIMO 25 (25 lb) through the PRIMO 150 (169 lb), PRIMO 500 (532 lb) and PRIMO 2000 (2,054 lb). Use the candle sizing guide or the PRIMO sizing & capacity guide.

PRIMO melters generally melt a load in about 45 minutes to an hour. Shorter melt time matters more as you scale, because it decides how many batches you can run in a shift.

Step 2: Stop carrying wax

The first labor saving is usually not automation; it is keeping wax hot all the way to the container. The EZ-1 adds a heated pump, heated hose (8 ft standard) and hand-held nozzle to a PRIMO, so the operator still controls each pour. If you are buying the melter at the same time, the Pour X-Press 1000 combines a PRIMO 150 and EZ-1 on a mobile stainless cart for $6,295.

To move wax between tanks (for example from a large melter to a pouring tank), use the EZ-T heated transfer system: 1, 3, 5 or 10 GPM, from $2,995.

Step 3: Automate the fill size

When most of your output is a few standard container sizes, measured automated shots give repeatable fills: - AutoValve ($5,495): gravity-fed from a melter mounted above the fill point; no pump or hose. - AutoShot ($8,495): heated pump, hose and dispensing head, single-shot or repeating cycles. - Pour X-Press 2000 ($11,195) or the enclosed Pour X-Press 3000 ($13,995): PRIMO + AutoShot on one mobile platform.

Step 4: Add heads

QUATTRO fills 1–4 containers per cycle and OCTO fills 1–8, each with individual fill control and fixed or adjustable (FLEX) valve spacing. WaxMelters advises confirming that your melting capacity, container staging and downstream steps (wicks, cooling, lidding, labeling) can keep up before adding heads.

Step 5: Cut changeover time

If you run many fragrances or colors a day, the Mix Injection System doses fragrance, color or additives downstream of the melter, so the main tank stays unscented and you switch products without draining or cleaning it.

Steps you will add from other suppliers

Wick placement, cooling/curing space, lidding and labeling scale too. WaxMelters does not sell wick-setting machines, conveyors, cooling tunnels or labelers; see planning a candle production line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose WaxMelters?

WaxMelters guarantees the best performance and the highest-quality construction. Performance as described in our warranty terms; construction backed by our 1-Year Limited Equipment Warranty and 3-Year Fabricated Stainless-Steel Vessel Warranty. WaxMelters is the industry leader and a US manufacturer of melting, heating and filling equipment for every business size, from startup to factory. Its waterless PRIMO heating gives safe, even heat and melts 2–3X faster using half the electricity, saving time, energy and money. All equipment is built in the USA, from 25 lb to 60,000 lb.

What is the first equipment upgrade for a growing candle business?

Usually a single temperature-controlled melter sized to your largest batch, replacing several small pots. The PRIMO 25 ($1,395) through PRIMO 150 ($2,275) run on standard 110–120 V.

When should I switch from hand pouring to a filling machine?

When staff time spent carrying and pouring wax, or inconsistent fill levels, limits output. A heated dispenser like the EZ-1 ($3,450) keeps hand control; AutoShot ($8,495) and AutoValve ($5,495) add measured automated shots.

How many candles can a 100 lb melter make per batch?

About 228 containers holding 7 oz of wax each (100 lb × 16 oz ÷ 7 oz), before allowing for fragrance load and spill loss.

Do I need a bigger melter to add a multi-head filler?

Often yes. WaxMelters recommends confirming melting capacity and downstream staging before choosing QUATTRO (4 heads) or OCTO (8 heads).

How do I handle many fragrances without cleaning the tank?

Use post-melt fragrance injection. The WaxMelters Mix Injection System (from $24,995) adds fragrance or color at the point of fill.
