Before setup or troubleshooting
Identify the exact unit first
PRIMO sizes, voltage, heating zones, temperature range and controller design vary. Use the equipment nameplate and controller face - not appearance alone - to select instructions.
Model and serial numberPhotograph the full nameplate and record the model, serial number and original order number if available.
Electrical ratingConfirm the nameplate voltage, phase, amperage and frequency match the facility supply.
Controller faceTake a clear front photo. PRIMO 25 and legacy units may use a controller that differs by unit, even within the same year.
Equipment configurationRecord all heat buttons/zones and any mixer, transfer or filling accessories connected to the melter.
Only trained operators who have read this guide may use the equipment.
Wear suitable protective clothing, heat-resistant gloves and eye/face protection for the material and process.
Install the unit level and securely on a stable surface that can support the full operating weight without tipping.
Keep the unit away from combustible materials. The source manual specifies a minimum 20-foot separation unless a written installation requirement for the specific system states otherwise.
Process only materials approved for the specific equipment configuration. Do not use flammable, explosive, toxic, corrosive or otherwise hazardous material unless the unit was designed and approved in writing for that service.
Review the material manufacturer's instructions, SDS, flash point and safe processing-temperature limits before heating.
Use only a properly grounded electrical supply that matches the nameplate. Do not defeat grounding or protective devices.
Do not use an extension cord, power strip, timer or shared overloaded circuit.
Do not connect/disconnect electrical connectors or remove components while energized.
Do not use a torch, heat gun or open flame to preheat the tank, valve or any component.
Keep controls, buttons, circuit protectors, plugs and cords clean, dry and free of wax/material buildup.
Do not operate the melter empty, with too little material, unattended, or after a leak or electrical fault.
Keep appropriate fire protection available and follow all facility, electrical and fire-code requirements.
Hot material can cause severe burns. Allow the tank and material to cool fully before disassembly, valve work, cleaning or service. Never add water to hot wax or another process material unless the approved process specifically requires it.
De-energize and stabilize the unit. The melter must be cool, unplugged, empty and secured on a level surface before valve assembly.
Inspect the supplied valve components. Confirm the ball valve, factory seal/gasket and thread-sealing material are present and undamaged. Do not remove a factory gasket or seal.
Install the ball valve. Apply the supplied PTFE thread-seal tape as specified. Start the threads by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten firmly with the correct wrench. Do not overtighten or use the valve body as a lever.
Close the valve. On the standard ball valve, the handle is perpendicular to the flow path when closed. Confirm the valve is closed before loading material.
Verify the electrical supply. Match the nameplate to a dedicated, grounded facility receptacle/circuit. Correct any mismatch before connecting power.
Inspect before first heat. Confirm the controls and exterior are dry and clean, all covers are secure, and no material can drip toward the control side.
Optional mixer: EZ-Mix and other mixer assemblies require their own mounting, shaft/blade and operating instructions. Do not treat the mixer section from the older combined document as part of the base PRIMO melter manual.
Prepare. Put on required PPE, confirm ventilation, close the ball valve and inspect the unit and power connection.
Load material before heating. Do not preheat or operate the melter empty. Begin a batch at least one-third full unless the model-specific instructions state a higher minimum.
Connect directly to the correct supply. Plug into a grounded receptacle/circuit matching the nameplate. Do not use a power strip or extension cord.
Turn on main power if equipped. Some larger models have a green main-power button near the power cord.
Turn on the required heat zones. Use the red heat button(s). Keep an upper zone off until material is above its marked minimum-fill line.
Set the approved process temperature. Stay within both the material manufacturer's limits and the equipment's rated range. For preheated material, follow the written process specification for the selected model.
Use the lid and mix as permitted. A lid generally reduces heat loss and improves uniformity. Mix only with an approved, properly secured mixer and process method.
Monitor operation. Do not leave the unit unattended. Watch the actual process temperature, controller output indication, material level and valve/control area.
Shut down. Turn heat zones off, turn main power off if equipped, unplug when safe, and allow the system to cool before cleaning or service.

On the TC4 controller, the up/down keys change the temperature setpoint. Fahrenheit/Celsius selection and calibration can be set.
TC4S basic operator steps: if want written instructions
Change the temperature setpoint
Press the up or down arrow to reach the desired approved temperature. Allow the display to finish blinking and save the setpoint.
Change Fahrenheit / Celsius
Press and hold MODE until the display shows PAR2.
Press MODE until the display shows UNIT.
Use the up/down arrow to select the unit, then press MODE to save.
Calibrate the displayed input value (IN-b)
Stabilize and mix the batch using the approved process, then measure bulk temperature with a suitable calibrated thermometer.
Press and hold MODE until the display shows PAR2.
Press MODE until the display shows IN-b.
Set the correction equal to actual bulk temperature minus controller reading, then press MODE to save. Example: controller 180°F and actual bulk 170°F gives a -10° correction.
Allow the process to stabilize and verify again. Stop and contact Support if the required correction is large, unstable or does not behave as expected.
Do not change other PAR1/PAR2 values from an old table. High limit, output type, sensor and hysteresis settings require instructions for the exact controller and PRIMO temperature range.

Legacy PRIMO controller videos (2014-2022) - open only if the controller face and model range match
Legacy controller reference: PRIMO 25 and legacy PRIMO controller configurations use RELAY output; current larger PRIMO configurations may use SSR. Never copy a RELAY/SSR, sensor, high-limit or advanced setting from a video that does not match the exact controller face and model. Discontinued controllers should be routed through the current-controller retrofit process when service or replacement is required.

Before each use, inspect the cord, plug, receptacle, buttons, protector, controller, valve and exterior for damage, moisture or material buildup.
Keep the controller, buttons and protective devices clean and dry. Clean only when the unit is unplugged and fully cool.
Inspect the valve joint and thread seal after removal/reinstallation and whenever material appears on the exterior.
Keep added piping/attachments to the approved configuration so the outlet does not become a cold spot or unsupported load.
Periodically review controller temperature with a suitable calibrated reference using a consistent, mixed bulk sample.
Document heat-up performance by batch weight, starting temperature, setpoint and time so gradual changes can be identified.
Do not bypass, up-rate or modify a fuse, breaker, high limit, controller output or grounding provision.
Electrical diagnosis, insulation-resistance testing and internal repairs must be performed by qualified personnel under the instructions for the exact unit.
Start with the specific symptom below. Do not perform electrical testing, open an enclosure or replace an internal component unless you are qualified and have written authorization/instructions for the exact unit.

Troubleshooting issue
PRIMO melter will not turn on
Symptoms: the controller display is dark, the red heat-button light is off, or the unit appears to have no power.
Stop if there are damage signs. Do not connect or reset power if the cord, plug or receptacle is hot, loose, damaged, wet, discolored, buzzing or producing an odor.
Confirm the correct supply. Have facility personnel verify that the grounded receptacle/circuit is energized and matches the nameplate. Another receptacle may be used only if it is a known-correct, dedicated supply with the same required rating.
Remove temporary power devices. Connect directly - no extension cord, power strip or timer.
Check the external controls. Turn on the green main-power button if the model has one, then the red heat button(s).
Check the external resettable protector. If it indicates a trip, continue with Fuse / breaker trips. Do not open the enclosure.
Check the setpoint. If the display is on but the unit is not calling for heat, confirm the setpoint is above the displayed process temperature and note whether the green OUT indicator turns on.
Submit the result. If power is available but the display and buttons remain off, stop and submit model/serial, nameplate, controller and power-connection photos.

Troubleshooting issue
PRIMO melter is blowing fuses or tripping a breaker
Symptoms: the unit's external resettable circuit protector opens, a facility circuit breaker/GFCI/AFCI trips, or a protective device opens when heat is turned on.
Do not repeatedly reset a breaker or replace a fuse.
A protective device opened for a reason. After a second trip - or any trip involving leakage, contamination, damaged wiring, heat, odor, arcing or an unknown cause - leave the unit de-energized until the equipment and circuit are examined by qualified personnel.
Turn the unit off and de-energize it. Disconnect power only if the plug/receptacle area is safe. Otherwise use the facility disconnect and a qualified person.
Identify exactly what opened. Record whether it was the unit's external resettable protector, the facility branch breaker, a GFCI/AFCI, or another protective device. A resettable protector is not the same as a replaceable fuse.
Do a visible exterior inspection only. Look for material leaking from the valve connection or running toward the controls; material on the circuit protector/buttons/controller; a damaged cord or plug; moisture; discoloration; loose parts; or a burning odor. Do not open the electrical enclosure.
Verify the electrical installation. Confirm the supply matches the nameplate, is grounded and is on the required dedicated circuit. Remove other loads from the circuit. Do not use an extension cord or power strip.
Determine when the trip occurs. Record whether it happens immediately on connection, when main power turns on, when a heat button is pressed, after approximately 5-10 seconds, when the OUT light comes on, or after the unit has heated for a period.
Reset only after the cause is understood and corrected. If qualified facility personnel determine that the trip was solely a branch-circuit overload from other equipment, remove that load and permit one controlled reset under facility procedures. If the device trips again, stop.
Do not attempt a moisture/low-insulation workaround. Older text referred to a low-megohm condition after storage. Do not repeatedly energize the heater to "dry it out." Suspected insulation resistance requires qualified testing and a controlled corrective procedure.
Send the diagnostic record. Include model/serial, nameplate, controller, circuit protector, full tank, valve area, cord/plug and facility breaker photos, plus the trip timing and material/load condition.

Troubleshooting issue
PRIMO heats slowly, unevenly or not at all
Symptoms: heat-up time is longer than expected, one area remains cool, material is not fully melted, or the controller is on but there is no heat.
Confirm adequate material. Do not test empty. Begin at least one-third full and keep material above every active upper-zone minimum-fill line.
Verify supply quality. Use the nameplate-matched dedicated circuit, direct connection and no extension/power strip. Have facility personnel verify voltage under load if needed.
Check heat demand. Set the temperature above the current process value and note whether the green OUT indicator turns on.
Check every required zone. Record which red heat-button lights are on. Do not energize an upper zone unless material covers its minimum level.
Reduce normal heat loss. Use the lid when permitted, keep the tank away from direct drafts/fans/open doors, and mix with approved equipment when the process allows it.
Review controller and material temperatures. Use a suitable calibrated thermometer and sample/mix consistently. A surface reading is not the same as the bulk-material temperature.
Inspect the vessel interior. After safe cooling and shutdown, check for heavy burned-on material or discoloration that can affect heat transfer or temperature sensing. Clean only by the approved method.
Record the behavior. Note batch weight, starting material temperature, setpoint, actual temperature, material brand/type/melt point and elapsed time. Identify whether heating stopped suddenly or declined over time.
Escalate abnormal results. If OUT is on with no heat, only one zone heats, heat stopped after a surge/outage, or any protector trips, stop and submit the results.

Troubleshooting issuePRIMO is overheating or heating above the setpointOpen the safety guidance, written checks and video
Troubleshooting issue
PRIMO is overheating or heating above the setpoint
Symptoms: the bulk material is hotter than intended, the controller reading and independent thermometer disagree, or the unit continues calling for heat above the setpoint.
If actual temperature exceeds the safe material or equipment limit: turn heat off and follow the material SDS/facility procedure for controlled cooling. Do not add water. Open the lid or mix only if the material-specific procedure and PPE make that safe.
Verify actual bulk temperature. Use an appropriate calibrated thermometer, mix/sample consistently and review it with the controller process value.
Confirm sufficient material level. Operate at least one-third full and keep active zones properly covered.
Lower the setpoint if the process permits. Allow time for the bulk material and vessel to respond; thermal lag can keep temperature rising briefly after output turns off.
Check controller behavior. Record the process value, set value and whether OUT remains on when the process value is above set value.
Check calibration only on the matching controller. Do not change input offset or advanced parameters until the controller face/model has been identified.
Improve safe temperature uniformity. If permitted, use the approved mixer and material procedure. Do not expose operators to hot splashes or vapors.
Stop if control is not responding. If heating continues materially above setpoint, the reading is implausible, or OUT behavior is abnormal, de-energize the unit and submit support results.
Troubleshooting issuePRIMO melter is leakingOpen written checks and video guidance
Troubleshooting issue
PRIMO melter is leaking
Symptoms: material appears at the valve threads/stem, below the valve, on the exterior, near controls or at a tank seam.
Stop heat and power. Keep material away from the controls and cord. Disconnect power only if the area is safe, then allow full cooling.
Photograph before cleaning. Take clear photos of the first visible leak point, the complete valve connection, the tank exterior and the controls.
Identify the source. Distinguish a threaded valve connection or valve stem from a vessel/tank seam. Material can travel before it drips, so the lowest wet point may not be the source.
For a threaded valve connection only: after the tank is cool, unplugged and safely emptied, inspect the supplied PTFE thread seal and factory gasket/seal. Reassemble by hand first, then tighten firmly with the proper wrench.
Do not operate a tank-seam or control-area leak. Do not weld, seal, drill or open the electrical area in the field without written authorization.
Do not use external flame or heat. Never use a torch or heat gun to loosen or reseat a valve.
Submit the leak location. Send photos, material type, temperature, when the leak began and whether it changes when the valve opens/closes.
Troubleshooting issueBall valve is open but material does not flowOpen the written no-flow checks
Troubleshooting issue
Ball valve is open but material does not flow
Symptoms: no material exits, flow is very slow, or the outlet re-solidifies while the bulk material appears melted.
Confirm the valve position. On a standard ball valve, the handle aligns with the flow path when open. Do not force the handle.
Confirm the entire batch is sufficiently liquid. A listed melt point may be below the temperature needed for reliable pouring, and color/fragrance/additives can change viscosity. Stay within approved material and equipment limits.
Allow the valve area to heat from the tank. Use the lid and approved normal operation. Do not use a torch, heat gun or open flame.
Remove unapproved downstream restrictions. Extra pipe, elbows, reducers or cold attachments can slow flow and create a solidification point. Make changes only after safe cooling and de-energization.
Do not insert tools through a hot valve. Never probe a pressurized/hot outlet or place hands beneath it.
Escalate persistent no-flow. After cooling, document material, setpoint, actual temperature, valve/outlet size and all attachments, then submit photos.
Have the following ready so Technical Support can route the condition without repeating the basic questions:
Company and contact information
PRIMO model and serial/order number
Full nameplate photo
Controller-face photo and displayed values
All heat zones/buttons and accessory configuration
Facility supply voltage/circuit information
Material brand/type and melt point
Batch weight/fill level and starting temperature
