Quick answer: If you sell what you make, buy a temperature-controlled commercial wax melter sized so your largest batch fills about one-third to two-thirds of the tank. Most new candle businesses start with the PRIMO 25 or PRIMO 100 on a standard outlet, move to the PRIMO 250 to PRIMO 1000 for wholesale, and use PRIMO 1500 and larger for factory lines.
Wax Melter vs Wax Melts: Not the Same Thing
Wax melts are small scented wax cubes or tarts for home fragrance. You drop one into a tealight or electric warmer and it melts a few ounces at a time to scent a room.
A wax melter is equipment. It is a heated, temperature-controlled tank that melts pounds of wax (soy, paraffin, coconut, beeswax or blends) and holds it at a steady pour temperature for making candles, wax melts, soap, cosmetics and industrial products. If you make and sell wax melts, a wax melter is the machine you use to produce them.
The Four Wax Melter Tiers
| Tier | Typical equipment | Batch size | Who it fits | Price and power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby | Kitchen double boiler, pouring pitcher or countertop pot | A few pounds per batch | Learning, gifts, testing recipes | Not sized for selling at volume |
| Small shop | PRIMO 25, PRIMO 50, PRIMO 75 or PRIMO 100 | 25 to 105 lb | Etsy, markets, first wholesale accounts | From $1,395, standard outlet |
| Growing and wholesale | PRIMO 150 to PRIMO 1000, plus EZ-1 or AutoShot | 169 to 1,226 lb | Wholesale, private label, several staff | $2,275 to $7,995 for the melter |
| Industrial | PRIMO 1500 to PRIMO 60000, or a custom tank | 1,675 to 60,000 lb | Factories, plant-scale processing | $9,750 to $198,995, 220-240 V and up |

Signs You Have Outgrown Hobby Equipment
- You melt several small batches to fill one order.
- Pours wait on the next pot of wax to melt.
- Color, fragrance throw or surface finish varies from batch to batch because the heat is uneven.
- You are carrying heavy pitchers of hot wax across the room.
- You just landed a wholesale account or a big holiday season.
At this point a dedicated melter pays for itself in time. The PRIMO 25 costs $1,395, plugs into a standard 110-120 V outlet at 300 W and holds 25 lb with digital control. See the best wax melter for candle making for a deeper comparison.
Step 1: Size the Wax Melter to Your Largest Batch
Start with the largest batch you normally run, not the smallest. A PRIMO can begin a batch at about one-third of rated capacity, so a larger model handles today's batch and leaves room to grow. For example, a 35 lb batch points to the PRIMO 50 as the closer fit and the PRIMO 100 as the growth option.
Candles per batch math: divide batch ounces by wax ounces per candle. A 25 lb batch is 400 oz, about 50 candles holding 8 oz of wax each. A full PRIMO 150 (169 lb, 2,704 oz) is about 338 of the same candles. Use the candles per batch sizing guide or the PRIMO sizing and capacity guide for your exact containers.
Step 2: Compare the Specs That Matter
Heating method
Waterless direct heat (PRIMO) or indirect water jacket (PW). Waterless melts 2-3X faster using half the electricity with no jacket water to maintain.
Temperature control
Look for a digital set point that holds wax steady. PRIMO runs Up to 212°F/100°C standard, with a High-Temp X-Treme option up to 400°F/204°C on many models.
Construction
304 stainless steel with a smooth #4 finish and full insulation, so the tank is easy to clean and the outside stays cooler.
Power
PRIMO 25 to PRIMO 1000 run on 110-120 V (300 W to 1,800 W). See the wax melter electricity guide and voltage guide.
Valve and expansion
A heated valve, stand and casters, and the ability to feed a heated filler later, protect your investment as you grow.
Support and warranty
Buy from the manufacturer for direct parts and service. PRIMO carries a 1-Year Limited Equipment Warranty and a 3-Year Fabricated Stainless-Steel Vessel Warranty.
Step 3: Plan How You Will Fill
Melting faster only helps if filling keeps up. The usual path: pitchers, then the EZ-1 heated dispenser, then an automated single head (AutoShot or AutoValve), then multi-head filling (QUATTRO or OCTO). Each step reuses your PRIMO. Prefer one cart? The Pour X-Press 1000 combines a PRIMO melter with heated dispensing.
Step 4: Industrial Buyers, Plan the Facility
At 1,500 lb and above, the melter becomes facility infrastructure. Review floor space, connected kW and capacity per square foot with the PRIMO footprint and utility calculator, confirm 220-240 V, 480 V or 600 V service, and send your material and process for an application review. Compare tank sizes on the industrial melting tanks page.
Why Small Shops Step Up to PRIMO
- Best performance, energy efficient. PRIMO melts 2-3X faster using half the electricity.
- Commercial capacity from 25 lb on a standard outlet, so there is no rewiring to get started.
- Digital control for repeatable fragrance load and pour temperature.
- Built and supported in the USA by the manufacturer, with published prices and online ordering.
- Ships within 7 days, unless a very large custom order.
Wax Melter Buying Guide FAQ
Is a wax melter the same as a wax melt warmer?
No. Wax melts are small scented wax cubes or tarts used for home fragrance, warmed a few ounces at a time in a tealight or electric warmer. A wax melter is production equipment that melts pounds of wax at a controlled temperature to make candles, wax melts, soap and other products.
What wax melter should a beginner candle business buy?
If you are selling candles or wax melts, start with a temperature-controlled commercial melter instead of a kitchen pot. The PRIMO 25 (25 lb, 300 W, standard 110-120 V outlet, $1,395) is our smallest commercial wax melter; the PRIMO 50 (56 lb) and PRIMO 100 (105 lb) leave more room to grow.
When should I upgrade from a pouring pot to a PRIMO wax melter?
Upgrade when you melt several small batches to fill one order, wait on wax between pours, see color or fragrance inconsistency from uneven heat, or start taking wholesale orders. A PRIMO can start a batch at about one-third of rated capacity, so you can buy for growth without waiting.
How many candles can I make per batch?
Divide the batch weight in ounces by the wax ounces in each candle. A full 25 lb batch is 400 oz, so about 50 candles that each hold 8 oz of wax. Allow for headspace and topping off, and use the candles per batch sizing guide for a detailed estimate.
Should I buy a waterless or water-jacketed wax melter?
Choose a water-jacketed PW melter only if your process or plant specification requires indirect liquid-jacket heating. Otherwise a waterless PRIMO gives even, digitally controlled heat with no jacket water to maintain, and melts 2-3X faster using half the electricity.
Do I need a special electrical outlet for a wax melter?
Not for most shops. PRIMO 25 through PRIMO 1000 run on standard 110-120 V, from 300 W to 1,800 W. PRIMO 1500 and larger are 220-240 V standard. Add up every heated device that runs at once and have an electrician confirm the circuit.
WaxMelters guarantees the best performance and the highest-quality construction. Best performance, energy efficient. Waterless PRIMO heating melts 2-3X faster using half the electricity, with safe, even heat from digital temperature control.
